Former Cuban Health Minister José Ramón Balaguer dies

Madrid Spain.- José Ramón Balaguer Cabrera, former Minister of Health of Cuba, died this Friday at the age of 90.

Cubadebate, When announcing the news, he noted that Balaguer was born in Guantanamo in 1932 and moved to Havana in 1949 to study medicine.

When the coup d’etat took place on March 10, 1952, without abandoning his university studies, he joined the fight against Fulgencio Batista and joined the group of the University Student Federation (FEU), participating in demonstrations and student strikes, points out the media official.

After the triumph of the Revolution, he held various military positions and in the leadership of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC).

Balaguer was appointed Cuban ambassador to the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) in 1990. Upon his return in 1992, he was elected Member of the Political Bureau, a body of which he was Delegate in the province of Granma between 1994 and 1995.

In 2004 he was appointed as Minister of Public Health. While in this position, the death, in 2010, of 26 patients of the National Psychiatric Hospital of Mazorra, in Havana, who were bathed with jets of cold water, in the middle of a winter wave, in addition to being subjected to permanent undernourishment.

In 2019, at the age of 87, he requested his release as head of the International Relations Department of the Central Committee, a position he had held since 2011.

The body of José Ramón Balaguer will be cremated and his ashes will be exhibited in the Veterans Pantheon of the Colon Necropolis between 9:00 and 12:00 in the morning this Saturday, July 16. Later they will be transferred to the Frank País Second Eastern Front Mausoleum.
