MÉRIDA, Mexico -. Former Cuban pitcher Domingo Perdomo died in Havana at the age of 92 due to the consequences of hip surgery. Sports journalist Yasel Porto reported this Saturday.
Perdomo stood out in the run-up to the National Series with the Vedado Tennis Club and was later an important coach in several provinces of the country, as well as a children’s teacher at Ciudad Escolar in Marianao, Porto said,
The former baseball player suffered the consequences “of general anesthesia, something inevitable especially at that age, it damaged his memory, he began to stop eating and it became increasingly complicated.”
Finally, respiratory arrest due to pneumonia ended his life, the journalist said.
Porto lamented the death of a sporting glory who lived his last years “in anonymity and simplicity after having transcended so much in his moment of glory.”
“Some friends were in charge of helping him, first when he was in the hospital and then at home, but loneliness in general was damaging his mood more and more,” he said.
Perdomo’s remains rest in the Colón cemetery in the Cuban capital.
Porto, who planned to visit him soon, described him as one of “those very old veterans who belonged to a special generation of which very few remain.”
Cuban baseball players who died in 2024
So far in 2024, several well-known Cuban former baseball players have died.
In July, the renowned Cuban former baseball player Juan Carlos Calvo He died at the age of 62, according to the Cuban Baseball and Softball Federation.
