Formally, December 20 is National Day of Mourning and mandatory rest.

The Law that declares December 20 of each year as National Mourning Day, was sanctioned by President Laurentino Cortizo, thus establishing it as a mandatory day of rest.

Law 157, “which adopts national awareness measures on December 20, 1989,” was unanimously approved last February by the plenary session of the National Assembly.

According to Cortizo “with the sanction of the law that declares December 20 as National Mourning Day, we settle a debt with the homeland, with those who fell in that tragic event whom we remember with respect, their families and with all Panamanians that we feel love for this blessed land.”

Starting this year, every December 20, the national flag must be raised at half-staff throughout the national territory. The law prohibits the sale, consumption and sale of alcoholic beverages after 12:01 am on December 20. December until 12:01 am on December 21.

This day it will not be possible to transmit or project strident music in all radio and television, state and private media.
