For almost a month, numerous forest fires have plagued the south-central area of the country, which has led to a wide deployment by the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf) and other brigade members from outside the country to contain the emergency.
In this sense, the accident claimed a new victim in the Biobío region and the total deaths due to the situation amount to 26.
The National Disaster Prevention and Response Service (Senapred) reported that he is a Belgian citizen, who is married to a Chilean woman, and who was already hospitalized a few days ago for a series of burns.
The Biobío region is the area with the highest number of fatalities. At the moment, 17 of them have been registered in the area, to which are added another eight in the region of La Araucanía and one in Ñuble.
Regarding the current situation of forest fires, the authorities reported 19 of them in combat; one in the Metropolitan region; two in the Ñuble; seven in Biobío; six in La Araucanía; two in Los Ríos and one in Magallanes.
The homes consumed by the flames amount to 2,410 buildings, with Biobío -again- being the most affected region with 1,706. Nationwide there are 7,657 victims and 408 sheltered.
