Specialized forces from the Ranger Corps (CGB) and the agriculture system today face a large-scale forest fire in Pinar del Río, the westernmost province of Cuba.
According to the local newspaper Granma, the incident does not threaten communities in the area, since it is located in a very intricate mountainous area.
The second head of the CGB in Pinar del Río, Andy Luis Valle, explained that the fire has two flanks and they could only reach one, which is why it is difficult to specify the proportions of the affected area.
Similarly, there is an abundant load of combustible material on the ground and the gusts of wind, close to 30 kilometers per hour, made it difficult to put out the fire, added the source.
The fire originated the day before in the afternoon in an area known as San Simón de las Cuchillas, belonging to the municipality of San Juan y Martínez.
In Cuba, the critical period for the occurrence of forest fires runs from January 1 to May 31, coinciding with the period of greatest drought.
These phenomena represent a threat to biodiversity in the country, which has a forest heritage that exceeds four million hectares of forests.
