Foreign policy of the Nicaraguan dictatorship fails: Defeat in the SICA, isolated in the UN and despised in the BRICS

The diplomacy of the Nicaraguan dictatorship has failed in all the scenarios in which it has tried to impose itself, as demonstrated by the diplomatic defeats of recent months, which for the opposition organization Democratic Concertation-Monteverde is “a failure of erratic foreign policy of the regime.

The opposition group highlights the most recent setback of Sandinismo’s diplomatic efforts, which resulted in a humiliation for the tyrant Daniel Ortega, as he failed to sneak into the group of emerging economies known as BRICS, where he was even abandoned by his supposed “strategic allies.” », China and Russia who did not advocate for him.

The BRICS held their world summit in Kazan, Russia, between October 22 and 24 in Russia, and the member countries, led by the two totalitarian powers, Russia and China; They ruthlessly obeyed the veto of Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which prevented Nicaragua from becoming a member of the bloc. Ortega has directed his foreign policy towards the Russians and Chinese, to the point of supporting Russia in its war against Ukraine and China against Taiwan, but this time his “strategic partners” ignored him in Kazan.

The opposition organization states, in a statement sent to the media, that the Sandinista dictatorship has ended up causing “shame” among its own allies.

Failure in SICA

But the defeats suffered by tyranny in the diplomatic field come one after another. On August 28, the foreign ministers of the member countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) rejected Ortega’s proposal to appoint the political operator of the dictatorship as secretary general of that organization. Valdrack Jaentschke. The regime, through the vice-dictator and government spokesperson Rosario Murillo, had to recognize that it had not managed to impose its political record and classified the defeat as “lack of consensus” not to say “rejection.”

The tyranny has had to present two shortlists to the SICA so that the new general secretary can be chosen from among them. However, in the opinion of analysts, if the first failed due to Jaentschke’s presence in it, the second is heading towards the same abyss because this time Ortega proposed three women, all three sanctioned and two of them accused of being criminals against humanity. along with Ortega and Murillo.

Isolation at the UN

If the failure in SICA is already monumental, in the United Nations (UN) it is worse. The international organization formed, in March 2022, the Group of Human Rights Experts (GHREN) and gave it a mandate for one year, extended for two more years, to investigate the dictatorship regarding crimes and violations of human rights. the DDs. HH. committed in the country following the social protests of 2018.

Although the diplomacy of the dictatorship has tried to impose the version that they were victims of an “attempted coup d’état” orchestrated by foreign forces with the support of internal opponents, they did not believe the story, and the GHREN has issued three conclusive reports: The Ortega-Murillo dictatorship has committed crimes against humanity.

Sandinista diplomacy failed to refute before the international community the statements of experts and the accusations of hundreds of victims, human rights organizations and opposition groups.

In the opinion of the political scientist Felix Maradiagain the recent period of sessions of the UN General Assembly, held at the end of last September, Nicaragua was isolated and did not achieve the rapprochements it sought.

«The participation of the Ortega delegation in the UN General Assembly was an absolute failure. The regime tried to project an image of resistance and obtain new support, but instead it emerged even more isolated, unable to expand its alliances and with growing international rejection,” said Maradiaga when consulted by Article 66

The foreign policy of the dictatorship is going from bad to worse. Now it is torn between rejection by the international community, recently renewed sanctions by the European Union and Switzerland, accusations of crimes against humanity by the UN, difficulties in accessing international credit and finally the rejection of its own political spaces.
