The Chancellery of Peru issued a statement in which it expresses its “absolute rejection” to the statements of the president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, who argued that former president Pedro Castillo, imprisoned in the Barbadillo prison for trying a coup d’etat in December 2022, is a persecuted politician.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru expresses its absolute rejection of the statements of Mrs. Claudia Sheinbaum, president of the United Mexican States, who flagrantly violate the principles enshrined in the Charter of the Organization of American States and reflect their total ignorance of Peruvian reality, its constitution and its legal system,” the institution said in a statement.
He added that Castillo “is not a persecuted politician, as Mrs. Sheinbaum”, and recalled that on December 7, 2022 “committed the flagrant bankruptcy of the constitutional order by announcing the unconstitutional dissolution of the Congress of the Republic and the establishment of an exceptional government, as well as the reorganization of the Judicial Power, the Prosecutor’s Office, the National Board of Justice and the Constitutional Court.”
“These facts constituted a failed coup d’etat and the manifest breakdown of democratic institutionality, which was properly sanctioned in accordance with Peruvian laws,” he continued.
Due to “the illicit acts perpetrated in flagrance and in accordance with Peruvian legislation,” he said, is that “the legal situation of the citizen Castillo is due to decisions adopted within the framework of the rule of law, with full respect for due process and the guarantees enshrined in the Political Constitution of Peru.” Therefore, “presenting its case as a political persecution constitutes a false and unacceptable statement.”
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Peru repudiates this ideologized position, which contradicts the basic principles of international law, in particular respect for sovereignty and the principle of non -intervention in the internal affairs of the States,” he said.
Likewise, the Foreign Ministry said that “it causes strangeness that Mrs. Sheinbaum intends to ignore that the United Nations Secretary General, by means of a statement of December 8, 2022, condemned any attempt to subvert the democratic order in Peru and called to respect the rule of law.”
What did Sheinbaum say?
On the last Friday, Sheinbaum posted on his X account a photo with Guido Croxatto, a lawyer for Castillo, in the National Palace. In the publication, he said that Castillo was “unfairly imprisoned” and expressed his solidarity.
“We know that your situation is not only a personal case, but a serious precedent of political persecution and discrimination in our region,” he said.
In addition, he urged the United Nations Organization (UN) to act “with decision to guarantee respect for human rights and justice.”
“Pedro Castillo’s freedom is also the defense of democracy and the dignity of our peoples.”
As is known, two weeks after Castillo was arrested for trying his coup d’etat, Mexico granted a political asylum to the former lady Lilia Paredes and her children. Peru agreed to give the salvoconduct, but, within the framework of the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations, he declared a person not pleasant to the Mexican ambassador, Pablo Monroy Conesa, and gave him 72 hours to leave the country.
