The foregoing is a departure from what was expressed by the previous holder of RR.EE., Antonia Urrejolawho in the exercise of his position pointed out that although Castillo had not respected the norms of the country’s Constitution, for Chile he was not a coup leader.

In the same conversation, Van Klaveren spoke of Nicaragua, Venezuela and China: countries on which the foreign minister avoided stating a position regarding the situation of DD.HH.

“Chile is not in favor of pointing the finger at countries in terms of human rights, as a general policy, except for some exceptions that we have seen, such as Nicaragua, which is a fairly emblematic case due to the circumstances in which they occur,” said the Secretary of state.

In the case of Venezuela, he indicated that Chile’s main purpose is to successfully work on the migration problem between the two countries. “I don’t want to be giving my opinion, I’ll leave that to the analysts (…). You have to combine different interests in foreign policy,” said the minister.

Regarding the Asian country, the foreign minister stated that “we have to take into account all the interests that are at stake and the country understands that. There are many interests that are at stake in the relationship with China, in the relationship with other countries.” .
