Yesterday, the Government of the President of the Republic, Gabriel Boric, reported that they are preparing a citizen consultation to outline the measures that the Executive will take in the future on foreign trade policy. The instance will include the opinions of the business world and civil society.
Under the premise “Trade for Development”, promoted by the Undersecretary of International Economic Relations (Subrei), it is intended to seek the legitimacy of the decisions made by the Government in this area.

But not everyone within the ruling party was aware of this decision. One of them is the Minister of Finance, Mario Marcel, who affirmed that he was not informed of the Government’s announcement on the preparation of a citizen consultation, for which he stated that “it would have been preferable if it had been done earlier.”
“We had no previous knowledge of this proposal, therefore, we are going to be very interested in finding out about it to find out what the meaning is, what the design that has been established or is being proposed is,” he said.
“It would have been preferable if it had been done earlier, but if that proposal is already there, we will look at it with interest,” he added.
These statements affected another State authority: the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola, who assured in a conversation with Canal 13 that said citizen consultation “is within the exclusive faculties of the undersecretary”, therefore, “he does not want authorization from the Treasury”.
Along the same lines, the chancellor commented that “this week I had coordinated to hold a meeting not only with the Minister of Finance, but with the different economic teams, with ministries such as the Economy, Mining and Energy, where we talk more broaden economic policy.
“Within that is foreign trade policy. I hope that this meeting will take place, coordination beyond this consultation is very important,” he concluded.
