The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Antonia Urrejola, declared the crucial election to have begun in which Chileans must approve or reject the Magna Carta proposal prepared by the country’s first Constitutional Convention. “The first person has voted. It is a very exciting moment. Since 2017 we have been celebrating this fact that Chileans abroad have the right to vote. This is the eighth process in the vote abroad”, said the chancellor, who was accompanied by the president of the Electoral Service (Servel), Andrés Tagle, the rapporteur secretary of the Electoral Qualifying Court (Tricel), Carmen Gloria Valladares, and the undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Ximena Fuentes.

The head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that the electoral roll abroad is 97,000 Chilean men and women, who will be able to attend 235 polling stations throughout 64 countries. Due to security issues, nationals residing in Haiti will not be able to exercise their right to vote. In all the other countries, according to the Secretary of State, the voting supplies have arrived, having been sent by FedEx, or through a PDI official.
“It is part of the wealth of our country. When the institutional framework works, what it does is enrich democracy and therefore it is a moment of celebration,” declared Minister Urrejola.
