Foreign Minister reiterates that Venezuela suffered a massive cyber attack

The Foreign Minister of the Republic, Yván Gil, reiterated that the country suffered a massive cyber attack that is being hidden “by fascism and the international media.”

Through his Instagram account, Gil stressed that despite this, “the truth always prevails” and emphasized that “our country is moving towards a future of peace and prosperity, despite the attacks of imperialism.”

In this regard, the Chancellor shared an article by historian Fernando Horta on the situation he has faced Venezuelatitled “If You Can’t Rig an Election, Rig the Audit Process.”

The text states that an election depends on trust and sovereignty, “and if you attack any of them, the election collapses.” It details that since the elections were held digitally, “the CNE has the election results as soon as the voting process ends.”

Cybersecurity report reveals attacks against the country

Also, share a report from a US company with more than 40 years in the field of cybersecurity, Netscout, which shows that Venezuela was the target of several attacks, using different techniques, last July.

According to the document, it is evident that the attacks between July 28 and August 1 “are not seasonal attacks (which happen every month due to something else) and
were directed at the Venezuelan electoral process.”

“They show that the attacks were DDoS and, therefore, were aimed at destroying communications between different voting points in Venezuelan territory and the CNE in Caracas. In a timely and specific manner,” he added.

The article adds that two days after the elections, opposition candidate María Corina Machado presented almost 25 thousand supposedly digitalized voting records on a parallel website. “It would take more than 86 days for all the scanning (…) it is unlikely that in 48 hours she would have this entire database and, furthermore, organized it.”

“My hypothesis is that María Corina already had a pre-organized database, created according to a statistical process that already included tests of the database consistency,” Horta said.

The historian stressed that, in practice, “the strategy of challenging elections by attacking audits seems to be common to the entire global far right.”

He also said that Venezuela suffered a massive information destabilization attack that combined cyberattacks on the country’s data transmission structures, “with an intense disinformation campaign on the networks (fake news), operated at a transnational level.”
