Peru’s Foreign Minister, Óscar Maúrtua, said Tuesday that it is not a State policy to promote the cession of territory to Bolivia. The statement came after President Pedro Castillo raised a query on “sea for Bolivia.”

“It is not a state policy and therefore not a policy of President Castillo’s government to promote any cession of Peruvian territory,” Maúrtua declared in his presentation to the Peruvian Congress today.

The foreign minister pointed out that the Castillo government has not considered or imagined that Peru grants a sovereign access to the Pacific Ocean to Bolivia, since this “would mean the transfer of national territory, which is constitutionally and politically impossible.”

The authority was summoned to the Peruvian congress after President Castillo raised last week, in an interview with CNN, a consultation in Peru on “sea for Bolivia.”

Yesterday, Castillo took a step back by pointing out that he expressed himself poorly. “Yes, I expressed myself badly, I apologize to our people. I want to tell you again that I will do nothing in my government without consulting the people,” he assured.
