The government of Gustavo Petro in Colombia is still waiting for the CNE to publish the official electoral records. He has not commented on the disclosure of minutes issued by the machines compiled by the opposition
The Colombian government has reported that it will send its ambassador in Caracas, Milton Rengifo, to the inauguration of Nicolás Maduro on January 10. So Vice Chancellor Jorge Rojas said it a week ago. This Sunday, December 29, the Colombian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Luis Gilberto Murillo, was emphatic in stating that the recognition of the electoral results of last July 28 depends on the publication of minutes by the electoral authority.
In an interview granted to Cambio magazine, Murillo indicated that, although it has been considered sending the Colombian ambassador to the possession of Nicolás Maduro, this decision would not imply a recognition of the results, but rather responds to fundamental diplomatic principles, such as respect between States and the need to maintain communication channels. open.
«This decision has not been made. It is one of the recommendations that the President has received. The decision to send the Colombian ambassador to Maduro’s inauguration would not imply, under any circumstances, a recognition of the electoral results«commented Murillo.
However, the Colombian Foreign Minister also expressed his personal preference that Colombia not send official representation to said event, despite the country’s need to maintain constructive relations with Venezuela, given the historical, cultural and economic connection between both countries.
“My preference as chancellor is that he not attend. Of course, it is necessary to take into account that in the case of Venezuela we share a dynamic border and a deep connection in family, social, cultural, historical, economic and commercial terms. These relationships transcend any political situation and are essential to guarantee the well-being of our border population. We have already experienced the serious economic and social consequences of border closures in the past. Our priority will continue to be protecting and promoting the interests and well-being of our people. The Government will take these factors into account,” commented the head of the portfolio in dialogue with Cambio.
The foreign minister also addressed the complexity of bilateral relations, pointing out that numerous Colombians reside in Venezuela, some of whom are arbitrarily detained, while Colombia has received nearly three million Venezuelan migrants.
According to Murillo, this situation requires a long-term diplomatic approach, aimed at strengthening cooperation on humanitarian, security and economic issues, always prioritizing human rights. “The interaction with Venezuela must be guided by a long-term vision of a State-to-State relationship, beyond governments and political situations, aimed at strengthening cooperation on humanitarian, security and economic issues, always with an approach that prioritize human rights and the well-being of affected communities,” the chancellor responded.
