After fulfilling a busy work agenda at the United Nations General Assembly held in New York, Foreign Minister Erika Mouynes will attend the state funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Japan, where she will also attend the bilateral agenda.
This trip responds to the intention announced in March to strengthen the country’s relations with Japan, in particular, and with Asia, in general.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs is the highest authority representing the Government of Panama at the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the first state funeral in 50 years, on behalf of President Laurentino Cortizo Cohen and the Panamanian people.
In October 2019, President Cortizo Cohen participated in the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito and had the opportunity to meet with then-Prime Minister Abe, who praised the democratic values and the century-old relationship shared by both nations.
Abe, a good friend of Panama, showed his strong support for fostering cooperation with Panama and financing key infrastructure projects such as the third line of the Panama Metro.
In preparation for the diplomatic mission, the chancellor met with the Japanese ambassador in Panama, Hideo Fukushima, with whom she agreed to include important political and commercial events in the trip, Japan being one of the most influential economies in the world.
During her only two days in Japan, the minister will meet with the most relevant actors from the government and the private sector, such as her counterpart Yoshimasa Hayashi, Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, other members of the Executive, parliamentarians and directors of important local companies, among which include Mitsubishi, Itochu and Hitachi.
“Japan has been a constant partner and friend for Panamanians. During the pandemic, the Japanese government donated 5.5 million in medical supplies to Panama, one of the most generous shows of cooperation that our country has received,” said the Foreign Minister about the good relations with the third user of the Canal.
“It is of vital interest for Panama to continue and strengthen the agenda with Japan,” he added.
At the invitation of the Japanese Government, Foreign Minister Mouynes has arranged meetings with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Japan International Cooperation System (JICS). Both organizations have extensive experience in cooperation projects in Panama and in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
In 2021, JICA and Panama signed a memorandum of understanding to develop the “Project to strengthen the Surveillance and Diagnosis Capacities of Covid-19 and other diseases in Panama”, which is providing the Gorgas Commemorative Institute with supplies and equipment to the monitoring of this type of pathogens. And, in 2020, it was through JICS that the Japanese government donated the aforementioned financial cooperation for the purchase of medical equipment, including ambulances.
Minister Mouynes will meet with the president of All Nippon Airways (ANA), with a view to establishing a direct air frequency with Panama, promoting Japanese trade and tourism to our country. She will also meet with the president of the Japan Shipowners Association.
