The foreign ministers of Mexico and Spain, Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón and José Manuel Albares, respectively, had a telephone communication on Wednesday night in which they spoke about the statements of the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who proposed to make a pause
in the relationship between the two countries.
Hours before flying to the city of Brest, in France, to participate in a summit on oceans, the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) spoke with his Spanish counterpart on the subject, diplomatic sources confirmed. However, they did not delve into details about the conversation.
The words of the Mexican President had an immediate impact on the Iberian nation. That same Wednesday, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs made a first statement in which he showed his surprise
for the approach and requested a clarification
to what he called sudden verbal statements
.
In January, magnificent bilateral relations
Albares also expressed surprise, especially since two weeks ago, on January 27, he coincided in Tegucigalpa, Honduras, with Ebrard, as part of the inauguration of President Xiomara Castro.

Relations between the two countries became tense after the Mexican president sent letters to the Spanish king, Felipe VI, and Pope Francis in March 2019, requesting that they apologize to the original peoples of Mexico for the abuses committed during the Conquest more than 500 years ago.
Spain rejected the content of the letter and has repeatedly refused to accept an act of historical revisionism and apologize. While Pope Francis sent an apology document to the people of Mexico for all personal and social sins, for all actions or omissions that did not contribute to evangelization
during the Conquest and colonial period. Which was broadcast in September 2021 within the framework of the 200th anniversary of the consummation of the Independence of Mexico.
