A federal control judge imposed informal preventive detention on Jesús Alejandro Vera Jiménez, former rector of the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos (UAEM) in the period 2012-2018; who is investigated for his alleged responsibility in the crimes of organized crime and money laundering (more than 77 million pesos), related to the case of The master scam.
The detainee’s defense requested that the constitutional deadline be duplicated to resolve his legal situation, so it will be Wednesday when it will be decided whether he is linked to criminal proceedings or not.
Judge Guillermina Matías Garduño, of the Federal Criminal Justice Center of Almoloya de Juárez, in the state of Mexico, presided over the initial hearing that began at 10 p.m. on Friday and, after a recess, continued this Saturday.
During the session, in which the Federal Public Ministry raised the accusation of the crimes, the judge agreed to double the deadline to resolve the legal situation of the accused. The defense stated that it requires time to review the 13 volumes and at least 30 annexes of evidence presented.
Pending the definition of his legal status, the former rector will remain in the Altiplano maximum security penitentiary center.
Vera Jiménez, who was arrested on Friday in Cuautla, Morelos, published a letter yesterday in which she accused the former PRD governor Graco Ramírez (2012-2018) of having initiated the accusations against him, as part of a political persecution.
He stressed that “that campaign led to federal and state criminal proceedings built on unfounded accusations and without legal basis. For more than seven years I have faced various files and accusations for alleged crimes of organized crime, operations with resources of illicit origin and improper exercise of public service.”
“However, time, truth and judicial resolutions have shown that such accusations were instruments of repression and wear and tear, not of justice,” he said.
