The price of the dollar has experienced a significant drop so far this year. Compared to the end of 2022 at 40,071 Uruguayan pesos (UYU), the current value of the dollar represents a decrease of 3.51%.
In addition, if we look at the value of the dollar in June of last year, there is a decline of more than 2.3%. These data reflect a downward trend in the value of the US currency in Uruguay.
The price of the interbank dollar has shown resistance, surpassing the 39-peso mark for more than a month. Since May 4, when it reached its maximum value of 38,952 pesos, the dollar has not managed to exceed that threshold.
Previously, it experienced an escalation of four consecutive days, going from 38,616 pesos to 39,074 pesos. However, since then, the value has gradually decreased, moving away from 39 pesos.
The price of the dollar continues to cause concern in the productive sectors of Uruguay, who argue a situation of “exchange delay.”
Recently, the Union of Exporters of Uruguay (UEU) and the merchants of the country’s coast have joined this concern, demanding measures from the national government. The uncertainty surrounding the value of the dollar and its impact on the economy has generated a call to action by various actors.
The president of Uruguay, Luis Lacalle Pou, has explained that the government does not always have the capacity to “influence” the price of the dollar.
According to his statements, the current situation stems from the large inflow of foreign currency into the country due to record exports in 2022 and the new investments made. These factors have contributed to the current foreign exchange outlook.
The retail price of the dollar has also experienced a decrease, standing below 40 pesos. According to the reference values of Banco República (BROU), the dollar was offered at 37.45 pesos for purchase and 39.85 pesos for sale. In addition, the last operation in the Electronic Stock Exchange of Uruguay (Bevsa) was agreed at 38,640 pesos, with a total number of transactions of 35 and an amount operated of more than 17.5 million dollars.
