And it is that a man of Texas was sentenced to 70 years in prison last Wednesday after he was convicted of harassing a public official for spitting at Lubbock County police officers.
Larry Pearson, 36, was arrested in May 2022 for domestic violence after a victim called. The victim told police that Pearson had hit her multiple times and that she had a gun.
The prosecutor said that after Pearson was taken into custody, she was upset that the victim was not arrested. It was at that moment that he began to kick the doors of the police vehicle.
When the officers opened the door to tell him to stop, he spat at both uniformed men. Pearson even continued to spit after arriving at the Lubbock County Detention Center.
Why the high sentence?
During the closing arguments of the sentencing phase of the Pearson trial, the prosecutor asked the jury to “send a message” to Pearson and the societygiven that the subject had prior convictions for aggravated robbery and ongoing family violence.
“You’re not going to turn 70 for something like this when you’ve never been in trouble before”said the judge.
The defense attorney argued to the jury that the sentence was for a “simple misdemeanor” in a circumstance that “got out of control.” However, due to his prior convictions, the minimum sentence Pearson could have received would have been 25 years.
