Florida Cuban-American Politicians Win Midterm Elections

MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban-American Maria Elvira Salazar He will continue to represent Florida’s 27th district in the United States Congress after defeating his opponent, Democrat Annette Taddeo, on Tuesday.

With 99% of the votes available, the Republican candidate led Taddeo by almost 15 percentage points. María Elvira had obtained 131,890 votes, while her rival 98,322.

“We won! We defeated the extremist socialists! This 2022 is the year of the Hispanic Republicans! If God is with you, who is against you?” the congresswoman wrote on social media.

María Elvira Salazar first ran for election in the 27th district in 2018, when she was defeated by Democrat Donna Shalala. However, the Cuban-American struck back at the Democrat two years later.

Republican Mario Díaz-Balart also won this Tuesday, widely ahead of Democrat Christine Olivo in the dispute over the 26th district. With 90% of the ballots counted, Díaz-Balart prevailed with 71% of the vote ( 140 019).

Former Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Giménez won the election in the 28th district over Democrat Roberto Asensio.

Another of the winners of the day was the Cuban-American senator Marco Rubio, winner of the state seat in the Senate that was disputed in these elections. With 85% counted, Rubio led Democrat Val Demings 57.4% by 41.6%.

Media elections in Florida also left Ron DeSantis re-elected as governor. With 81% of the votes counted, the Republican candidate beat Charlie Christ. At the close of this information, DeSantis accumulated 4,034,504 votes (58.3%), for 2,843,125 (41.1%) the Democratic candidate.
