Florida bans school lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation

Judith Pena | April 19, 2023

School lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation are prohibited in the state of Florida, United States, as of this Wednesday, when members of the board of education voted to ban them in all educational grades of public schools.

The rule expands on previous legislation, signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis, that prohibited these lessons for students in preschool through third grade. Now the State Board of Education has decided that this type of teaching is not appropriate at any grade level, unless it is within the health or reproduction courses.

The new rule establishes that educators who violate the provisions of the Law could be suspended and even lose their license.

“We are bringing clarity about what students are expected to learn. Nothing more than that,” said Esther Byrd, a DeSantis-appointed board member.
