Residents of the Indonesian region of Aceh Tamiang climbed on slippery logs and walked for about an hour this Saturday (6) to get help, as the death toll from the floods and landslides that hit Sumatra Island this month reached more than 900.
The known death toll from cyclone-induced floods and landslides in three Indonesian provinces of Sumatra, including Aceh, was 916 on Saturday, with 274 reported missing, according to government data. The storm systems also killed about 200 people in southern Thailand and Malaysia.
Survivors from the Aceh Tamiang region on Sumatra’s northeast coast walked for an hour, over scattered logs and overturned cars to reach an aid distribution center set up by volunteers, they told Reuters.
Volunteers distributed clean clothes and brought a tanker truck with fresh water so people could fill plastic bottles, witnesses told Reuters.
