Air passenger capacity on the Lima and Madrid route could double from September of next year compared to the figures for the beginning of the year due to the increase in flights on this route, which has been announced by the Iberia airlineThe Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported this Monday.
Through a statement, the ministry recalled that the increase in Iberia flights between the capitals of Spain and Peru “will be gradual” and will go from registering a frequency of seven weekly flights to eleven between March and August, which would increase the available seats. to 3,828 in this period.
Then, starting in September, the company will offer 13 weekly flights and, with this, “the number of passengers will almost double to 4,524, compared to the figures at the beginning of the year (2,436),” according to the ministry’s calculations.
“At an economic level, this greater frequency of flights will translate into additional flows of 57,000 passengers more than what was registered last year,” said the head of Foreign Trade and Tourism, Luis Fernando Helguero.
LIMA-MADRID FLIGHTS
He specified that, in total, 528 flights will be registered between Madrid and Lima, instead of the 364 that were previously counted, and, thus, he estimated that the economic impact could be greater than 70 million dollars in foreign currency income to the country for this year.
“The airline has also shown interest in connecting flights from Lima to twelve other Peruvian destinations, including Arequipa, Cajamarca, Cusco, Chiclayo and Iquitos, which will strengthen domestic tourism,” the minister stressed.
Iberia advanced its growth plans in Peru last week and forecast that, during the six months of the next European summer season, the number of seats for the Madrid-Lima-Madrid route will be 54% higher than in 2022 and 12 % greater than pre-pandemic capacity.
He pointed out that, in this period, an offer will be displayed in this corridor that will exceed 210,000 seats.
