Flamengo took advantage of the home advantage to defeat Palmeiras 3-2, this Sunday afternoon (19) at the Maracanã stadium, and reached the same 61 points as Verdão, which remains in the lead in the Brazilian Championship for the highest number of victories in the competition.

With this triumph, Rubro-Negro da Gávea gains confidence to face the final stretch of the competition, in which they need to stumble less than the team led by Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira to win the national title. Palmeiras, on the other hand, needs to recover quickly from this setback to continue fighting to win the Brazilian Championship.
The game
Flamengo and Palmeiras put on a great spectacle for the more than 71 thousand fans who attended the Maracanã stadium. In the first movements of the initial stage, Verdão created the best opportunities to open the scoring. And they could have opened up an advantage after just 2 minutes, if the match referee had signaled a penalty in favor of the São Paulo team when midfielder Jorginho pushed defender Gustavo Gómez inside the area.
However, Rubro-Negro managed to hold off Palmeiras’ initial pressure and were more efficient to take the lead after nine minutes. Goalkeeper Rossi sent a ball to Pedro, who, with great skill, got rid of defender Bruno Fuchs’ marking before sending a deep ball to Arrascaeta, who set off at speed to beat goalkeeper Carlos Miguel.

Portuguese coach Abel Ferreira’s team continued to look for the attack, and finally reached their goal in the 24th minute. Full-back Khellven lifted the ball in the box and Vitor Roque rose above Emerson Royal to head it past Argentine goalkeeper Rossi.
The confrontation remained open until the last minutes of the opening stage, when Flamengo took advantage of the Palmeiras defense’s inattention to score twice. The first was in the 37th minute, when Bruno Fuchs blocked Pedro inside the area. Penalty for Rubro-Negro, who took the lead again thanks to a perfect shot from midfielder Jorginho. Then, at 44, the one who failed was Anibal Moreno, who, at the edge of the area, lost control of the ball to Pedro, who did not forgive Carlos Miguel.

In the final stage, Palmeiras tried hard, and managed to score in extra time, with defender Gustavo Gómez, after a great play by Facundo Torres on the left wing. Other than that, Flamengo was very confident to hold the advantage until the final whistle.
