Flamengo fought hard, but ended up losing the Recopa Sul-Americana title after being defeated 3-2 in extra time by Lanús (Argentina), on Thursday night (26) at the Maracanã stadium, in Rio de Janeiro, in the return match of the competition. The trophy went to the Argentines, who triumphed in the first leg with a score of 1-0 last Thursday night (19) at the La Fortaleza stadium, in the province of Buenos Aires (Argentina).

This is the second title that Rubro-Negro has missed the opportunity to win in the current season, after being beaten by Corinthians 2-0 in Brasília in the Supercopa Rei dispute.
Pushed by their passionate fans, Flamengo took control of the actions from the first movements of the confrontation. However, it was the visitors who took the lead, thanks to a failure in the red and black defense. In the 28th minute of the first half, full-back Ayrton Lucas passed the ball back to goalkeeper Rossi, who ended up slipping and allowing Castillo to control the ball and shoot into an empty goal.

But the Argentines’ advantage was short-lived. In the 33rd minute Varela threw the ball into the area and the ball hit Carrera’s arm. Then the judge signaled the maximum penalty, which was efficiently taken by Uruguayan midfielder Arrascaeta.
After the break, coach Filipe Luís made changes to make his team more offensive to try to reach the score needed to win the title. The drama of the confrontation increased in the final stage, and reached its peak in the 34th minute, when the referee awarded another penalty in favor of Flamengo, this time for a foul inside the area in Arrascaeta. After the VAR (video referee) confirmed the infraction, midfielder Jorginho took the penalty and did not miss.
With a 2-1 victory in the 90 minutes, the match went into extra time, in which the Gávea team appeared to be physically exhausted and ended up conceding two goals in the second stage of extra time. The first came in the 12th minute, when defender Canale rose above the Brazilian team’s defense to head firmly into the goal defended by Rossi.

Three minutes later goalkeeper Rossi failed again. He took a poor goal kick and Walter Bou controlled the ball. The Lanús striker then started at speed, dribbling past Rossi and being free to finish and secure the goal that gave the scorer final numbers.
