Five tips to recognize a frozen fish product in good condition

In the markets of Lima and Callao, frozen fish products are offered in different marketing channels and from different origins. For example, from the aquaculture subsector there are frozen shrimp tails, scallops, salmon fillets, tilapia fillets, basal fillets, etc.

Among those from extractive fishing are rings and slices of pota, portions of Perico or Mahi Mahi, hake fillets, tuna medallions, squid, octopus, horse mackerel, mackerel, among others.

Toscanelli states that the per capita consumption of fish products in Lima and Callao is 18 kg, similar to the national average, however, the consumption of frozen fish products reaches 3 kg per year.

In this sense, the specialist offered five tips so that consumers can recognize a frozen fish product in good condition, it must have the following characteristics:

  • The expiration date is a maximum of 8 months from its freezing.
  • The packaging must not be internally frosted.
  • The pieces must be frozen individually, not joined piece by piece.
  • Preferably consume frozen fish fillets in vacuum packaging.
  • It should have a typical coloration, yellowish coloration could be associated with a rusty or deteriorated product.
