AREQUIPA, Peru – The United Nations General Assembly will be held next September and several Republican senators asked President Joe Biden in the United States to deny visa applications from the dictators of Cuba, Venezuela and Iran, to prevent them from attending the meeting.
Senator Rick Scott sent the request to Washington, which was supported by Marco Rubio, Tom Cotton, Joni Ernst and Markwayne Mullin.
“The United States must prevent the UN General Assembly from becoming a stage for the most evil leaders on Earth to gain credibility and promote their dangerous views, which pose significant threats to the national security of the United States and its allies,” the politicians said in the letter.
Miguel Díaz-Canel, according to US senators, has inherited and maintained the Castro dictatorship, as well as the brutal oppression of the people on the Island.
“He has a decades-long history of threatening the United States and hosting its worst enemies, including allowing Communist China to build a spy base 90 miles from the United States and recently hosting military exercises with Russia that brought Russian nuclear-powered submarines just miles off the coast of Florida.”
On the Venezuelan case, the document questions that Nicolás Maduro has opened the doors of his country to enemies of the US such as Iran, Russia and China, while actively trying to steal an election the people of Venezuela and imprison their political opponents to maintain their illegitimate hold on power.
“Maduro’s extensive record of human rights abuses has caused millions of people to flee their country, fueling the illegal immigration crisis at the U.S. southern border and driving dozens of dangerous criminals into our country, where several have been charged with heinous crimes, including murder and rape, against innocent American civilians,” they said.
On the other hand, regarding Masoud Pezeshkian, the senators recalled that the Iranian ruler, after his recent inauguration, has publicly promised to continue the policies of his predecessor, the “Butcher of Tehran,” of attacking Israel and the United States.
“Iran is directly responsible for the horrible October 7th attack against Israel and the recent rocket attacks that killed a dozen innocent Israelis, including children, on a football field in the Golan Heights,” the letter said.
The lawmakers also noted that since that date, Iranian-backed militants in the Middle East have killed three U.S. service members and wounded nearly 200.
“While the United Nations General Assembly is a forum for diplomatic negotiations and dialogue, the United States has historically taken principled positions against welcoming foreign leaders who threaten our values and interests to participate in this event on our soil.”
In this sense, the document recalls former US President Ronald Reagan when in 1988 he denied a visa to Yasser Arafat for their support for terrorism sponsored by the state. It also recalls the case of Donald Trump, who similarly barred Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif from entry.
“In this spirit, we urge you to deny entry visas to dictators Pezeshkian, Díaz-Canel, Maduro and any other leader whose presence at the UN General Assembly would undermine our national security,” they stressed.
