The Civil Police identified today (22) the body of Antônio Carlos dos Santos, 56, after a papilloscopic examination, as one of the four victims who disappeared in the storm on February 15 in the city of Petrópolis, in the mountains of Rio. The body was found last Sunday (13). This brings the death toll in the February landslide to 234. Three more people are still missing.
The Civil Police of Rio de Janeiro reported that it identified the five bodies that arrived at the Regional Technical and Scientific Police Post in Petrópolis in the last three days. In addition to Antônio Carlos dos Santos, university professor Nelson Ricardo Ferreira da Costa, 59, and his mother, Heloísa Helena Caldeira da Costa, 86, were identified, as well as Carmelo de Souza and Jussara Belarmino Souza. The other four victims were buried in the storm on Sunday (20).
The registration of those who disappeared as a result of Sunday’s rain has been carried out by police officers from the Petrópolis police station who visit the city’s shelters. So far, according to the secretariat, three people have not been located: Miriam Gonçalves do Valle, Mario Augusto Queiroz Carvalho and Vanila de Jesus da Silva.
On Tuesday afternoon, the body of another victim of last Sunday’s storm was located. The identity has not yet been released. The Fire Department reported that the victim is an adult man who was buried in Washington Luiz Street, downtown, where houses collapsed due to landslides and stones.

The Petrópolis Municipal Development Company (Comdep) is working to clean the roads affected by the overflowing rivers and landslides resulting from the heavy rain that hit the city on Sunday.
To speed up the work of removing barriers and cleaning the streets, the city has reinforced teams of workers, trailers, backhoes and trucks in different parts of the city, in clearing the roads and cleaning the affected areas. The work is focused on removing the trees that hit the electricity grids and obstructed the roads.
