The war between factions Sinaloa Cartelone of the most powerful drug trafficking organizations in Mexico, exploded on September 9. It has caused an escalation of violence, focused mainly in Culiacán, which totals some 150 murders, according to figures from the state prosecutor’s office.
The criminal conflict also involves personnel from the Culiacán municipal police which is being investigated by the federal prosecutor’s office of Mexico, as recognized by the Sinaloa government itself.
The origin of this spiral of violence is attributed to a fight between the drug trafficker’s children. Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán and those close to another of the cartel’s co-founders, Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.
Zambada, 76 years old and one of the historical leaders of the criminal group along with Guzmán, was arrested in the United States on July 25, where he was taken on a plane by one of Chapo’s sons.
The veteran capo accuses Guzmán Jr. of kidnapping him and handing him over to American justice.
The former president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, blamed the United States for this bloody dispute He alleges that he acted unilaterally to arrest Zambada.
