Five members of a family are murdered in Acapulco, Guerrero

The seven victims belong to the same family and among them are two teenagers, two sources from the local prosecutor’s office and the Secretary of Security told AFP, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to testify.

The attack occurred in a home in the town of Tres Palos, in the municipality of Acapulco, located on the outskirts of the popular port and affected by high levels of poverty and violence.

The prosecutor’s office has already begun an investigation for the crimes of “aggravated homicide” and “intentional injuries,” the statement added.

Guerrero, with a vast mountain range and coastline on the Pacific, is experiencing an escalation of violence due to fights between gangs that dispute control of drug trafficking and other criminal activities.

Last Friday, authorities reported that they were investigating the disappearance of 17 people, including five minors, in the municipality of Chilapa.

On October 6, just six days after taking office, the mayor of the capital, Chilpancingo, Alejandro Arcos, was beheaded.

Since December 2006, when a controversial military anti-drug operation was launched, there have been more than 450,000 violent deaths and tens of thousands of disappearances in Mexico, according to official figures.
