Five hectares of La Amistad International Park have been affected by fire in the highlands

Despite the efforts of the authorities to extinguish the fire that was generated for more than 36 hours, the flames have spread to the La Amostad International Park.

Joint Task Force (FTC) personnel indicated that they are continuing to extinguish the Plant Mass Fire (IMAVE) in Cerro Punta, a township of the same name in the Tierras Altas district, which has not been controlled.

“Unfortunately, after five in the afternoon today, it is confirmed that the fire has entered the La Amistad International Park (PILA) and approximately five hectares have been affected,” they said.

The inclement weather, the smoke, the lack of precipitation and the topography of the place have made difficult the control and extinction maneuvers of the IMAVE reported last Wednesday morning.

Units of the Benemérito Fire Department, park rangers and technicians from the Ministry of the Environment (MiAMBIENTE), the National Aeronaval Service, NGO SAR Panama and the National Civil Protection System (SINAPROC) participate in the operation.

It should be noted that this is the first time that an IMAVE has been reported on this hill, which is an icon of the Tierras Altas district.
