MIAMI, United States. – On April 26, Florida International University (FIU) will host the forum “Right and Left in the 21st Century”, organized by the Inter-American Institute for Democracy and the Center for Economic Freedom. Adam Smith”, both belonging to the house of higher studies.
The forum, which will meet from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. “seeks to discuss and collect proposals on the current nature of the concepts of ‘left’ and ‘right’, which deserve various and different meanings in society , politics, and public and press opinion in different latitudes such as Europe, the United States and Latin America”, reads the statement released by FIU.
According to this note, academics, journalists, politicians and ex-governors of great prestige and experience who will participate in the four panels of the Forum will try to answer the following questions: “Does the left and the right exist? What are they? Is it possible to standardize the concepts? Why do these terms represent different concepts in different places today?
“It is evident that our region and the world today are experiencing the combined blows of meta-truth, polarization, and the rise of non-democratic regimes or dictatorships that are eroding democratic governance while fostering market chaos. There is a need to develop adequate analytical tools to deal effectively with these challenges. The Forum aims to start the process of developing these analytical tools”, indicates the call.
According to FIU, guests at the Forum include groups of academics from Columbia University, Georgetown and the host campus itself, as well as an award-winning group of journalists from CNN, Fox News, Mega TV and SiriusXM Radio, among others. .
Among the guests, the names of Luis Almagro, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS); Álvaro Uribe, former president of Colombia; Tomás Regalado, former mayor of Miami; María Werlau, director of the Cuba Archive; Y Carlos Albert MontanerCuban political analyst and writer, among other personalities from journalism and politics.
The mission of the Inter-American Institute for Democracy, one of the organizers of the Forum, is the promotion and defense of the principles of freedom, democracy, human rights, and institutions in the Americas. It is, according to its own presentation, a pluralistic and non-proselytizing think tank made up of volunteers from around the world that studies, researches and disseminates political and economic successes that strengthen democracy and promote freedom in the region.
