The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaumconfirmed this Thursday that he will hold a “small meeting” with his American counterpart donald trump during his trip to Washington to attend the lottery for the soccer world cupwhich both countries will host together with Canada.
In this way, the first face to face of both leaders will take place, who in the recent past have expressed conflicting points of view on various issues of international politics, highlights the agency EFE.
“We are going to have a small meeting with President Trump, and another with Prime Minister (Mark) Carney,” Sheinbum noted during his usual daily press conference, without providing more details about that meeting.
However, press reports indicate that the center of these meetings will be trade between North American nations, and advancing agreements in this direction in a context marked by the tariff war and the protectionist policies promoted by Trump.

The meetings are confirmed after this Wednesday Trump indicated that he will possibly let the T-MEC – free trade agreement with Mexico and Canada – expire, whose review would take place next year, and that he will seek a new trade agreement with his neighbors.
The Mexican president was traveling this Thursday night to the American capital to participate in the ceremony that will define the composition of the groups of the universal tournament.
Sheinbaum announced that, after participating in the draw, he will have a meeting with Mexican men and women living in the United States and, on Friday night, he will return to Mexico City to lead the celebration of the anniversary of the start of the Government of the National Regeneration Movement (Morena) in the capital’s Zócalo a day later.
Three countries awaiting their fate
As for the World Cup draw, it will take place this Friday at the Kennedy Center in Washington. It will define the 12 groups of the next soccer World Cup, in which 48 countries will participate for the first time.
As host nations, Mexico, the United States and Canada have been assigned the groups in which they will be seeded.
By determination of FIFA, Mexico leads Group A and will be the protagonist of the opening match, set for June 11, 2026 at the Azteca Stadium.
For its part, Canada will be the leader of Group C, while the United States, which will host most of the matches in its territory, will lead Group D. Today it will be known who accompanies them in their respective keys.
For Mexico, the draw will mark one of the most important milestones prior to the 2026 World Cup, and a day later the other matches scheduled in its three venues will be announced, as part of the calendar: Mexico City, Guadalajara and Monterrey.
