US deportations and reprisals
Since Trump’s arrival at the White House, thousands of migrants have been deported to their countries of origin under strict immigration policies. In the case of Colombia, the tension reached its maximum point on January 26, when the Petro government rejected the entry of US aircraft with deported Colombian citizens.
The Colombian president demanded that migrants be treated with “respect and dignity,” which generated an immediate reaction from the Trump administration. As retaliation, the United States imposed tariffs, revoked visas to Colombian officials and established travel restrictions on US territory.
The confrontation generated uncertainty and concern about the possibility of a commercial war between the two nations. However, hours after the imposition of reprisals, both administrations managed to reach an agreement that allowed disparaging the diplomatic crisis.
