The president of the Defense Council of Pinar del Río, Yamile Ramos, today called on the population to prepare to preserve human lives and minimize the damage before the arrival of Hurricane Ian in the territory.
The guidance is that families with vulnerable housing should move to safe locations. About 50,000 people will be protected in the province, around 6,000 will do so in shelters and 44,000 in the homes of relatives and friends.
The meeting evaluated the insurance of tobacco in selected, curing houses, deposits and fertilizers, and the protection of livestock and crops.
The Institute of Meteorology confirmed that the organism reached category 2 on the Saffir Simpson scale this afternoon, and that it will impact Pinar del Rio tonight or during the early hours of Tuesday.
The maximum winds of the system continue to increase and reach up to 135 kilometers per hour with higher gusts. Its minimum central pressure dropped to 976 hectoPascal. Its movement follows a course close to the north northwest at about 20 kilometers per hour.
In the next six to twelve hours, Ian will continue to approach the Isle of Youth and the south of this province, traveling over an area with favorable conditions for its rapid strengthening.
The first effects of the hurricane, according to meteorologist Miguel Ángel Hernández, will be accumulated rains of 200 and 300 millimeters in the next few hours in towns in western Cuba.
Ian is the fourth meteor to circulate in the area in the month of September of the current cyclonic season, which runs until November 30.
