More than 300 district and provincial mayors participated in the first Convention of Mayors of Peru 2023, developed in the Ayacucho region, and spoke about the serious crisis facing the country. Mayors from the departments of Junín, Ayacucho, Ica, Áncash, Pasco, Cusco, Huancavelica and Lima provinces participated in the activity.
“From these stands and on behalf of my counterparts, I ask Congress and the executive branch to take a single position without political overtones to stop this act of violence that has brought mourning to more than 50 families. Let’s think of the people who put us as an authority seeking dialogue to agree on the social peace that Peru needs and avoid deaths and economic decline in the country,” said Dennys Cuba Rivera, mayor of Huancayo.
The Huanca authority, who received the support of his colleagues, spoke for them and asked that, “despite this crisis that the country is experiencing, the development of the towns cannot stop. The mayors have the responsibility to give results and the population is waiting for it and the only way is to show with work”.

Marco Antonio Gasco Arrobas, current president of the Association of Municipalities of Peru (AMPE), in dialogue with Peru21, spoke about the crisis in the country. “I deplore violence, wherever it comes from. We as AMPE have put our voice of peace and governability. In recent years, we have had six presidents who have forgotten about districts that have had 25,000 and 30,000 of Foncomun where progress has not been made. I call for an end to the violence.”
Cuba Rivera called on his counterparts to unite in order to generate a collective development agenda for all districts and provinces. “If we manage to be part of the AMPE board of directors, we will coordinate with the Central Government the management of at least one project for each of the districts. When I was 26 years old, I was elected mayor of the Quilcas district (Huancayo) and I embarked on a seven-day ride with my population to Lima to get more than 15 million soles for water and sanitation projects that hundreds of families enjoy today. We have the ability to manage and fight ”, he indicated.
