First case of cholera confirmed in the country

The Ministry of Public Health through the Vice Ministry of Collective Health and the Directorate of Epidemiology, confirmed this Thursday the first imported case of anger in the country.

According to the health entity, it is a 32-year-old foreigner who entered the country last Monday, October 17, from Port-au-Prince through the province of La Altagracia, presenting acute diarrhea suspected of cholera.

“The patient has amoebic colitis, acute pyelonephritis and pre-existing kidney failure, she is admitted to the Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Altagracia in the municipality of Higüey receiving adequate treatment,” he explained in a statement.

Public Health reported that the suspected case was promptly detected the day after it entered the country through the National Epidemiological Surveillance System (SINAVE).

“Thanks to the timely notification, the rapid response committee was immediately activated, carrying out the interventions on the spot. In the same way, the corresponding epidemiological fence was carried out with all the people who could have had contact and so far there are no reports that they have presented symptoms of the disease, “he said.

The authorities indicated that confirmation of the diagnosis was obtained today by the Dr. Defilló National Surveillance Laboratory of the Ministry of Public Health, reporting Vibrio Cholerae, serogroup 01, serotype Ogawa.

They specified that cholera is an acute diarrheal disease transmitted through food and water contaminated with the Vibrio Cholerae bacterium. Most cases develop mild dehydration, only 20% develop moderate to severe dehydration.

Given this, the Ministry of Public Health confirms the epidemiological alert published on Monday, October 3, and urges:

To the population in general:

  • Consume well-cooked food and drinks prepared with drinking water.
  • Protect the water from possible means of infection and in all cases boil it before consumption.
  • Wash your hands frequently before eating food and after going to the bathroom.
  • Go to a nearest health center in case of acute diarrhoea.
  • Report the occurrence of cases to public health authorities.
  • Be attentive to the recommendations issued by the Ministry of Health.
