Firm opposition to reform project

Proyecto reforma constitucional irá comisión bicameral

This morning, the Fuerza del Pueblo party reiterated that it will participate in the meetings of the bicameral commission, but that it will oppose the constitutional reform proposal introduced in the National Congress by President Luis Abinader.

Meanwhile, the spokesman for the Social Christian Reformist Party (PRSC) bloc of deputies, Rogelio Alfonso Genao Lanza, reported that this organization will propose several modifications to the presidential proposal, as soon as the debates begin.

Deputy Rafael Tobias Crespo, delegate of the People’s Strength In the commission, he said that there are serious problems in the country that merit special attention from the authorities, “but they have chosen to prioritize a reform to the Constitution that at this time has no reason to exist.”

“For example, we have the endless series of power outages and the increase in the price of basic necessities, the high cost of living in general,” he said.

Crespo suggested that instead of carrying out a constitutional reform, the head of state should focus on lowering the prices of the family basket.

For his part, Genao Lanza understands that “there will be modifications regarding the unification of elections, the number of deputies, the proposal for 2028 and others.”

Complaints

The meeting took place amid complaints among pro-government congressmen over Abinader’s proposal to reduce the membership fees of deputies.
