The Fire Department rescued in the morning of today (9) the body of the last victim who was missing in Paraty, in the south of Rio de Janeiro, since last week’s rains in the state. As a result, the death toll from the storm, which fell between the night of April 1 and the dawn of the following day, reached seven in the municipality.
In total, the rains that fell at the beginning of the month left 18 dead in the state. In addition to the victims in Paraty, the storms caused landslides that killed ten people in Monsuaba, in the municipality of Angra dos Reis.
In Mesquita, in Baixada Fluminense, a man was electrocuted to death in a flooded street. In Cachoeiras de Macacu, in the mountain region, the victim was a woman dragged by a flood.
Firefighters are still looking for three missing people in a landslide that occurred on Itaguaçu beach, on Ilha Grande, which belongs to the municipality of Angra dos Reis. According to the Fire Department, teams specialized in search and rescue in disasters work on site, with the help of sniffer dogs, aircraft, drones, backhoe loaders and boats.
Rio-Santos
Last week’s storm caused extensive damage to the Rio-Santos highway (BR-101). According to the Federal Highway Police, there are still two points of total interdiction in the region, one in the Patrimônio neighborhood, in Paraty, and another in the bordering São Paulo city of Ubatuba, very close to the border between Rio and São Paulo.
In addition, there are 11 partial interdiction points along the highway, between Mangaratiba and Paraty, with a stop-and-go route.
