A 59-year-old firefighter died in a rescue operation of two tourists who were trapped on a hill in San Pedro de Atacama, Antofagasta region.

Yesterday, four foreign tourists climbed the Toco hill in San Pedro de Atacama at 5,500 meters high. After going up a few meters, they decided to go down.

However, two of them, of Brazilian nationality, were trapped in the place, which activated the rescue protocol in the Fire Department and Carabineros.

In the early hours of the morning, both tourists were rescued, but as a result, the firefighter volunteer who suffered from health problems related to ascent to high altitudes died.

The tourists, who had signs of hypothermia, were taken to a health center for evaluation while the Fire Department moved to the Legal Medical Service.
