Former employees of the Latam airline demonstrated on Thursday morning in the vicinity of the Jorge Newbery Metropolitan Airport, demanding a solution to the situation of those who were left unemployed after the dissolution of the company that operated in Argentina, but without the measure affect, for the time being, the operation of the air station.
It is, according to union sources, of about 2000 employeeswho were laid off when Latam Argentina stopped operating in the country in 2020.
The protesters cut Costanera Avenue into two sectors, at the height of the Columbus Monument and in front of the Aeroparque Cargo Terminal, which made it difficult for passengers to arrive until access to the ‘check in’ sector, since they had to leave the vehicles in which they were traveling and enter on foot.
Members of the City Police and the Airport Security Police attempted to open at least one lane to enable passengers to access the Aeroparque hall, on a particularly complicated day due to the important movement that is registered as a consequence of Holy Week.
All the companies that operate flights at the Jorge Newbery Airport reinforced their frequencies from this Thursday due to the high demand for tickets to the main tourist destinations in the country, so the movement was significantly higher than usual.
“Our fight plan takes place in a context of full reactivation of the commercial airline industry. As we said from day one, post-pandemic reconstruction must be with everyone inside”argued the unemployed workers of Latam through a statement.
In mid-2020, Latam Argentina announced the closure of the local subsidiary and stopped operating domestic and cargo flights, although it maintains international operations.
