Fire of great proportions suffocated in eastern city of Cuba

A large fire that occurred after midnight on Tuesday in the center of the city of Banes, Holguín, had been put out in the morning hours of today, Wednesday, according to local media reports.

The incident occurred on General Marrero street and, until the closing of this information, its causes were unknown. It caused damage to five homes and two facilities, affecting some 16 people, although no fatalities were reported.

According to the information offered on social networks by the local station, Radio Banes, the rapid and coordinated action of the forces of the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the Fire Department, the people and State agencies prevented major effects.

A few meters from the place is the Baní Indo-Cuban Museum, the only one of its kind in Cuba and the Caribbean whose original collection is a treasure that shows the life of the primitive inhabitants of the Island. This place was not damaged by the fire, as posted on the Facebook page Holguin Heritage.

Given the event, and according to a newspaper report Granmathe population of Banense has unleashed a spontaneous solidarity movement aimed at supporting the affected people, now housed in the Hotel Oasis, in the city itself.

In statements by the president of the Municipal Assembly of People’s Power of the municipality, Yander Rodríguez Santana, the five houses that were affected by the fire will be rebuilt by constructive forces from the territory.

Both the provincial authorities of the Communist Party and the Government, whose headquarters are about 60 km from the city of Banes, were at the scene this morning.
