The explosion of a fuel tank after a lightning strike caused a large fire in the industrial zone of Matanzas Bay in the afternoon hours of today Friday.
The fire occurred in crude oil storage tank 52 at the Supertanker Base, The Ministry of Energy and Mines reported on its Twitter account.
According to reports, at the time of the explosion the tank was at 50% of its capacity.
“Until this minute, no injuries or loss of human life have been reported,” the official information said. Several fire trucks came to try to control the fire. Local authorities also attended the scene.
Last-minute reports indicate that firefighters are trying to cool the entire area with plenty of water so that the flames subside and do not spread to the rest of the tanks.
