More than 60 firefighters from 10 different fire stations were mobilized this Sunday morning (12) to fight a fire at the Uruguaiana camelódromo, a popular shopping center in the center of Rio de Janeiro.
On social media, residents share images of the flames and smoke, which can be seen from different parts of the city.
“There were no victims in the incident,” the Fire Department said in a statement. According to the text, the fire reached part of the camelódromo’s pits. The affected stores are located at the intersection of Rua dos Andradas and Rua Senhor dos Passos, close to the entrance to the metro station.
There is still no information about the causes of the fire. The Uruguaiana camelódromo stores sell a wide variety of products, such as cell phones and other electronic equipment, stationery and party items, clothes, shoes and food.
Through social media, the Rio de Janeiro City Hall Operations Center reported that the Municipal Guard, the Traffic Engineering Company (CET-Rio), the Municipal Urban Cleaning Company (Comlurb) and the energy services concessionaire Light also are on site. “Rua Uruguaiana closed and traffic being diverted along Rua Buenos Aires”, records the post.
According to a statement released by the state government, military police were also deployed to assist the Fire Department and isolate the area for investigation. “The Civil Police are investigating the causes of the fire,” says the text. The note also adds that Governor Cláudio Castro is monitoring the situation.
