MIAMI, United States. — The Cuban economist Elías Amor assured that the catastrophe generated by the explosions in the industrial zone of Matanzas could bury Cuban tourism in the coming months.
The expert noted on the blog Cubaeconomy that the incident “could end up driving tourism away from Cuba this summer, dealing a severe blow to the regime’s expectations of collecting foreign currency, for which the exchange measures of August 4 ordered.”
“Tourists do not like pollution, much less think that they will be threatened by a column of possibly harmful gases,” explained the economist in a column published on Monday.
Elías Amor emphasized the environmental impact that the catastrophe could have in an area like Matanzas, which guarantees the regular transit of thousands of tourists to Varadero.
“It does not seem that this scenario is going to paralyze the country, but it is still curious that in the midst of the devastation, Díaz-Canel does not think of anything other than requesting an immediate evaluation of the environmental impact that the column of smoke may cause. emitted by the fire”, added the expert.
For Amor, the Matanzas incident will only allow the island’s regime to shift the focus of the anti-government protests that have taken place in recent weeks. However, he made it clear that the island’s economy will take a hit from the loss of fuel.
“There are those who believe that everything that happens is related to each other and, apart from unusual atmospheric phenomena, is a consequence of the inability of the regime to break out of the vicious circle of the communist economic and social model: blackouts, explosions, fires, drop in tourism. , less income, economic debacle, social protests. At the moment, they have in the Matanzas fire an instrument to change the focus and not talk about the growing citizen unrest, “said the economist.
