Fire in Chile leaves 20 homeless and 10 houses destroyed

According to preliminary reports from the National Emergency Office of the Chilean Ministry of the Interior, the fire that started at dawn on Saturday, June 17, affected the Recreation sector in Viña de Mar, while in Valparaíso the emergency occurred in Cerro Esperanza. At least 20 people were affected early this Saturday, June 17, after a fire registered in the Valparaíso region, on the central coast of Chile, which completely destroyed at least 10 homes in the cities of Viña del Mar and Valparaíso.

According to preliminary reports from the National Emergency Office of the Ministry of the Interior, the incident affected the Recreo sector in Viña de Mar, a neighborhood near the coastline, while in Valparaíso the emergency occurred in Cerro Esperanza.

During the course of the morning, firefighters were able to control the flames at both points, with no injuries recorded so far. Those affected, according to local media, were transferred to the houses of neighbors and relatives.

The emergency also produced the interruption of the electricity supply to more than 2,500 people, although the service has already been restored.

In December of last year, Viña de Mar suffered the total destruction of almost half a thousand houses as a result of one of the most voracious urban fires recorded in the area.

In February of this year, the forest fires in that country revived with greater force in the regions of Biobío and La Araucanía, located in the south of the country. At the time, the Minister of the Interior, Carola Tohadetailed that “the fire reached very worrying characteristics” in populated areas, such as the commune of Teodoro Schmidt and Victoria.

The Executive reported that around 25% of the fires registered so far in 2023 have been intentional, phenomena that during the last two weeks have claimed the lives of 25 people and have burned more than 400,000 hectares throughout the year. country.
