A fire broke out in the building that housed the former Canecão concert hall in Botafogo, in the South Zone of Rio de Janeiro, this Wednesday (4). According to the Military Fire Department of the State of Rio de Janeiro, the Humaitá Barracks were called at 8:57 am by people who were passing by the scene of the incident. The military controlled the fire this morning and there were no injuries.
In a statement, the Bonus Klefer consortium, responsible for the space since 2023, reported that “there was an incident during the demolition of the steel structures at the front of the development”. According to the statement, the fire started while the team responsible for the demolition was cutting a metal structure. At that moment, a spark accidentally hit a fiber container.
“The Fire Department was called, but the situation had already been completely controlled by the demolition team itself, even before the Fire Department arrived on site. The consortium would also like to reassure everyone that there were no injuries and that the works are continuing normally, with no impact on the planned reconstruction schedule for Canecão.”
The consortium took over the space after signing of the concession contract with the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ) for the installation of new buildings, including a university restaurant.
