MIAMI, United States. – A large fire consumed the remains of the old La Concha social circle this Thursday afternoon, located in the Playa municipality, in the cuban capital. Although the flames were controlled hours later, the fire regained intensity until it was finally extinguished well into the night, according to reports on social networks.
The incident caused no casualties, but left serious damage to the weakened structure of the building, which had been completely abandoned for decades.
Although the authorities have not yet offered an official version of the origin of the flames, several hypotheses on social networks point to a bonfire on the beach that was not adequately attended to as a possible cause.
Images shared on different platforms showed the dense column of smoke, visible from different neighborhoods of the city.
The main building of La Concha dated from 1929, when it was inaugurated as a beach club with a design signed by the New York firm Schultze & Weaver. After 1959, the place was expropriated and converted into a social circle, with the argument of “democratizing” its use. As time went by, the lack of maintenance caused the progressive deterioration of the facility, which currently looked in dilapidated condition.
