The devastating iFires have devastated more than one million hectares in the San Matías Integrated Natural Management Area (ANMI), leaving almost 40% of its total surface in ashes.
Authorities, park rangers and residents describe the situation as the worst disaster andn the ANMI and they hope that a miracle will help put out the flames that have moved to hard-to-reach areasdamaging forests and swamps, home to unique species such as the blue macaw, which is already suffering from the burning of its nests.
The deputy governor of the province Ángel Sandoval, Luis Miguel Carracedo, reported that until two days ago they were working in the community of Ascensión de la Frontera, where the fire was contained, but the swamp and the ANMI San Matíasbetween the communities of Santo Corazón and San Fernando, continues to burn.
