To know when it will be time to retire, the worker needs to be aware of the rules stipulated by the Pension Reform approved in 2019. For retirement based on contribution time, the minimum age was raised by six months. Ages increase by six months each year. In the case of women, the age will reach 62 years old in 2031, while for men, it will reach 65 years old, from 2027 onwards. The possibility of retiring using the points system (sum of age and contribution time) also There are changes this year. For women, 92 points are required (with at least 30 years of contribution). For men, 102 points (at 35 years old in the INSS system).

A different situation is for teachers, who need to have a minimum contribution time in teaching (25 years for women and 30 years for men). In 2025, female teachers need to gain 87 points and male teachers, 97. The score will be increased by one point each year until reaching the limit of 100 points for women and 105 points for men.

Toll

There are also “toll” transition rules aimed at people close to retirement. The 50% toll requires the worker to complete an additional period corresponding to half of the remaining time on the date of retirement (2019). The 100% toll requires a minimum age, contribution time and completion of an additional period equal to the missing time. This method may provide a higher benefit.

At the 50% toll, people would need to work for another half of the remaining time to reach the expected contribution time (30 years for women and 35 years for men). In the case of a 100% toll, men would need to be 60 years old, and women, 57. With two years left to retire, for example, workers would have to spend another four years in service.

The National Social Security Institute provides a tool so that workers can simulate the time needed to request the benefit, in the INSS application. All rules can be found at institute website.
