Former police officer who killed George Floyd was sentenced to an additional 21 years in prison
A federal judge sentenced Derek Chauvin, a former police officer who suffocated African-American George Floyd, to 21 years in prison for violating the victim’s civil rights.
Chauvin was already sentenced last year by a Minnesota state court to 22 and a half years in prison for the murder of Floyd, of which he will serve 15 years.
The former Minneapolis police officer pleaded guilty last February to violating Floyd’s civil rights after closing an agreement with the Prosecutor’s Office to simultaneously serve this sentence with the one he already faces for murder.
Chauvin was sentenced to 21 years in federal prison by Judge Paul Magnuson, who harshly criticized the former police officer’s actions in Floyd’s death.
The Prosecutor’s Office requested a sentence of 25 years, while Chauvin’s defense had requested a maximum of 20 years.
Putin says Russia has not yet started “nothing serious” in Ukraine
Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Russia has not yet started “anything serious” in Ukraine, stressing that Russian troops are currently focused on Donbas, in the east of the country.
“Everyone should know that we really haven’t started anything serious yet. At the same time we do not refuse to hold peace talks. But those who refuse should know that the more time passes, the more difficult it will be to reach an agreement with us, “he said at a meeting with the leaders of the parliamentary groups and the leadership of the Lower House in the Kremlin.
The president devoted a good part of his speech to attacking the West and affirming that Russia is not to blame for the armed conflict.
The Russian president considers that the West “should have understood that they have already lost since our special military operation began, because its beginning also means the beginning of a radical rupture of the American world order.”
British Foreign Secretary called for calm and unity until the election of a new leader
British Foreign Minister Liz Truss, considered one of the favorites to succeed Boris Johnson as Tory leader, called on the Conservative Party on Thursday to maintain “calm and unity” until there is a new leader.
The head of the Foreign Office, who has cut short a trip to Indonesia due to the resignation presented today by Johnson as a result of the massive resignations of members of his Cabinet, considered in a message posted on her Twitter account that “the prime minister has taken the right decision”.
“The Government under the leadership of Boris (Johnson) has achieved many achievements: executing Brexit, vaccines, and supporting Ukraine (in its war with Russia),” the foreign minister tweeted.
The minister added that “calm and unity are now needed to continue governing while a new leader is found.”
